What makes students love this school so much? What are the guiding principles behind the school that makes parents and students stay committed to the school? Mr. Edward Jan Fang, President of Living Word Shanghai Bilingual School, explains these concepts.

注重找到成功的潜力

Capitalizing on Everyone’s Innate Success

讲座一开始，方正老师就指出大多数家长都迷惘的一点。明明我们的孩子在小学阶段表现的非常好，为什么到了下个阶段会突然对学习有所怠惰，并且在个性和沟通的方面很难以驾驭呢?

方正的回答是从自己的母校耶鲁大学校长Peter Salovey出发的，其实“EQ”就是这位校长在掌任耶鲁大学前发明的。他把孩子“在学校表现很好，但在社会上的表现不如学校成绩”的因素全部归纳统称为——EQ，并且认为学生应该更多的注重平衡发展。虽然IQ可以在学科和兴趣爱好方面充分体现，可国际上的高等学府更感兴趣的却是孩子如何把兴趣爱好发展成专长的过程和孩子是否有全攻的潜力。

对于这句比较不好懂的话语，方正老师用了一个很简单的数据说明，“如果有100孩子，那就有100个兴趣爱好，中间只会有10到15个孩子能把它变成专长，2到3个孩子变成专精。”然而任何喜欢的事情都可以做到出人头地，美高在做的就是帮助孩子找到这些，一旦自己决定本身的发展，就可以全神贯注直到出人头地，最终找到成功的潜力。

At the beginning of the presentation, Mr. Edward Jan Fang outlined an important question that many parents have regarding their child. Why in Primary School was my child so studious, and why did he or she make such a drastic negative changes upon entering Middle School? Why do students suddenly become so lazy and uncommunicative in this next stage of their education?

Mr. Fang’s answer was based on the words of a Peter Salovey, a director at Yale University. He stated that EQ (Emotional Quotient) was an incredibly important aspect of each students’ development. The sudden change in academic performance and behavior from Primary to Middle School can be attributed to EQ, or lack thereof, and that students and families alike should emphasize well-rounded development. Although a student’s IQ is reflected in their academic performance, schools around the world are focused just as much on their extracurricular activities and other aspects of their EQ.

Mr. Fang explained this concept in simpler terms using an example. 100 students will have 100 different interests, but out of these 100, only 10-15 can turn their interest into a specialization, and only 2 or 3 will be able to turn their interest into mastery. Any mastery of a skill will let someone stand out above the rest, and Living Word Shanghai is committed to allowing students to discover, develop, and grow these habits. Once a student discovers their own passion, they will be able to naturally allow that passion to allow them to succeed.

在讲座中方正老师风趣的讲道，他认为小学部的孩子就像一个个小超人，每到周末就不停的赶场去上课外班。可每到到中考阶段家长就把这种课外班停掉专心中考，没有时间关注身边的事情，最后就只剩下一份成绩单和厚厚的证书。

在这里方正老师分享了一个他曾经在国外学校印象深刻的三个孩子，这三个10年级的孩子通过一个明治维新的科研项目，向他请教了一个问题，“在19世纪的中叶，日本有一次全盘西化运动并一跃成为世界强国，而中国只有在19世纪末的时候才有一次不超过百日的维新运动!他们想知道为什么日本能做到而中国做做不到?”在解答这个问题的同时，也深深触动到了方老师。

虽然申请的学校需要的成绩，但它很难成为走进下一段路的凭证。美高一直教育孩子们的不只是在成绩上具备申请的条件，而且也教导孩子去如何证明自己已经准备好了。

Mr. Fang also suggested in his speech that Primary School students are like mini-superheroes. At the onset of every weekend they are ushered to and from extracurricular training classes and tutoring sessions; however, as soon as they have to take senior high school entrance testing examinations, parents cancel these extracurricular and tutoring sessions to focus solely on the entrance examinations, with the ultimate goal being to obtain a transcript and certificate.

Sharing his own experiences as an international school abroad, he recalls one time a case in which a trio of 10th grade students, in the middle of a project concerning the Japanese Meiji Restoration, asked why at the end of the 19th century Japan came to become such an influential world power and why China did not? While answering this question, the teacher was also deeply moved.

Although applying to an elite school requires elite grades, other aspects of an individual are also incredibly important; it is also very difficult to prove that you have sufficiently grasped these important aspects in your grades alone. Living Word Shanghai not only helps students achieve elite grades, but also helps them prove that they are ready for the next step in their lives.

培养情商，成为社会引导者

EQ Development and Becoming a Leader in Society

证明拥有成功的潜力，就需要证明你有正确的价值观、正确的人生观、正确的世界观;它将证明你可以面对挫折，并在面对道德困境的时候，能用灵活度和创意来进行解决。

方正老师建议，不管孩子读几年级，不管距离申请大学还有多久，都要先看一下国际大学申请人所问的问题。你会发现他们的问题完全锁定在孩子情商的发展，譬如耶鲁大学的问题——“你这辈子得到的的建议?对你获益良多的是什么?”

在这个全球化的时代，语言能力更应该有所发展，而不是把他变成一个考试科目。要知道孩子很难变成一个不折不扣的美国人、英国人，要想在国际化的环境中变成一个社会引导者，完全出于孩子价值观和情商，并养成主动学习的能力、自由的思维和独立思考的逻辑能力。

In order to prove that you have the potential for success, you must first demonstrate that you have the necessary values, outlooks, and perspectives on the world. You must demonstrate that you are able to face setbacks and be able to solve complicated dilemmas with flexibility and creativity.

Mr. Fang points out that no matter how many years remain until a child is able to apply for University, it is first important to examine the questions that elite Universities ask their applicants. You will find that the questions are entirely related to figuring out the EQ of the applicant. Yale University, for example, “what is the best advice you’ve received in your lifetime?”

In this globalized age we live in now, it’s important for students to develop their language skills, rather than teach them how to take tests. Although it’s impossible for students to become 100% American or British, in an internationalized learning environment they are able to be guided to become their own leaders, develop a strong sense of self-worth, develop strong critical thinking abilities, and excellent studying habits.
