世界历史是社会科学领域的重要课程。上海美高学校学子们在这些课程中,不只从教科书获得知识,也尝试自己查找资料做课题。透过这些练习,学生学习如何自己获得知识,并且发展出自己的方式将获得的知识展示出来,与老师和同学沟通。
History and Geography are important courses under the area of social sciences. LWS students who take these courses not only learn material from the textbooks, they also do research and make projects. Through such practices, they learn how to gain knowledge by themselves, as well as develop and express their own ways to display and communicate what they learn with teachers and classmates.

在前半学期的世界历史课当中,学生进行了许多不同的课题创作,例如关于历史事件的创意写作。在后半学期,学生表演历史短剧、制作详述史实的海报、基于历史的创意写作,以及小测验,检查学生对课程内容的了解。学生们也会做PPT,自己选择主题,并在班级中演讲。
During the first two and a half months of class students have performed different activities such as classwork, handouts, and creative writing recreating historical events. For this second part of the semester, students did activities such as performing historical dramas, elaboration of posters that represent historical moments, creative writing about history and small quizzes to check the understanding of the contents. Students will also need to craft a PPT with a theme of their choice and present it in class.
在期中评量中,学生们根据自己选择的主题制作PPT。学生探讨了美索不达米亚、埃及和新的文明中心;还探讨了次世界大战的前因后果,以及俄罗斯革命。我们让学生将自选的课题与同时期在中国发生的类似事件或文化方面进行比较。这对他们有点困难,有些学生从来没有比较过中国和外国历史;有些虽然比较了两者,但没有放在同一历史时期来比较。学生们从错误中学习,下次会做得更好。在后面的PPT中,学生将对历史进行更多的个人反思,减少关于事实的描写。
In the midterm evaluation, students have made PPT on a topic of their choice but related to the contents explained in class. G8 students studied Mesopotamia, Egypt and the new centers of civilization. G9 studied the road to World War I, the war and the Russian Revolution. One of the goals was for students to compare their chosen subject with a similar event or cultural aspect that occurred in China around the same time. This point has been a little difficult for them because some have not compared their chosen theme to the history of China, and others have compared it but not with the same historical period. We learn from mistakes and next time we will do better. Also in next PPT students will provide more personal reflections on the story and write less data.
