Summer Bridge Classes – Where China meets the World

进入到上海美高学校，你会发现新同学、新老师、新朋友、新的学习工具等一切都是新的。包括小学初中等低年级的学生从其他学校到我们美高学校后不熟悉新的学校氛围、面对一些新的学习情况不知所措从而感到有陌生与畏惧的心理。没有关系，上海美高学校会提供一个月的学习适应期让新同学了解我们学校的各种学习情况，乃至为今后去美国长远发展有一个更长的时间过度和适应。

As a new comer to our school, everything looks new to you, classrooms,classmates, surroundings and facilities, teachers, everything. Junior high or high school students from other schoolsmay not know much about our school, so naturally, some are a bit afraid of the strange, new environment.Nevertheless, all this needs a period of transition and mental adjustment, with whichthe school help. The school offersa one month period for new students to adapt and prepare for the upcoming semester.

，我们为5～8年级(初中和初中预科)和9～12年级的高中生提供教育体系的转化，为下学期适应课程作好相应的准备，以便学生提前全面了解美高学校上课的模式。例如我们会教同学们如何写学习报告、预习功课、有效做课堂笔记、如何使用WORD、EXCEL、PPT和各种学习工具。让学生能够很快适应我们的学习环境。

First of all, we provide different curriculums before the new semester for students in grades 5 to 8 (Jr. High) and 9 to 12(high school) who with to transfer to our school. This isto make them fully prepared for adaptingto the new study habits. It includes: what to prepare in studies, how to take notes in class, how to make best use of those notes, and how to finish assignments using resources outside of class.

There will be an instructive reading introduction for thenext semester to introduceour teaching style in advance, and help new studentsadapt to instruction in class. For example, learning how to write reports, takenotesin class, become familiar with various facilities, and learning how to use office tools such as wordprocessing, Excel, Power Point, and how to access theschool’s internet.

第二，学习ESL课程。由于新同学面对全新的英语环境需要适应，我们在英语方面会给学生做一个月的适应性培训。让同学提升英语的听说能力，提高阅读的速度和理解的正确率，进而提升独立完成Essay写作的能力。让同学们熟悉各种学科中常见的英语词汇与表达方式为正式上课做好准备。一个月下来后同学的英语将有本质的提高。

Second, the students need to improve their English to meet challenges of the new learning environment. 1)We prioritizeimproving listening comprehension, speaking capacity, reading speed and comprehension, andwriting skills.

2) We help studentsbecome familiar with common English words and expressions ineach subject, in addition to their ESL courses. The new students must also prepare for history and literatureclasses to keep up in class.

第三，对美高学校生活环境的提前适应。我校桥梁课程除了安排白天学业课程，也安排下午的体育运动，让学生劳逸结合，提前适应我校的学习生活，学会尽早独立。18：30～20：30晚上布置晚自习的内容。晚上22：00以后准时熄灯休息。在熄灯以后及上课期间内学生不允许使用手机与电脑等与学习无关的用品。

Thirdly, the program helps new students adjust to life in general at Living Word. Besides day classes, we also arrange sports in the afternoons to let the kids maintain a balance between work and play. In preparing the students for life at Living Word we try to help them become independent as soon as possible. Between 6:30 and 8:00 pm they have independent study time. After 10:00 pm, the lights go out and kids go to bed. From when the lights out to when the next day’s classes begin, students are not allowed to use their phones, computers or study-related devices
