My name is Lukas Holas and this year it is my greatest pleasure to teach English and History&Politics for grades 7, 8 and 9 and International Relations for our high school students. More specifically, I am looking forward to meeting all students who have selected subjects such as English Acceleration, English and American Literature, History&Politics and European Affairs. I am eager to share my knowledge and experience gained during my Master's and PhD studies of the International Relations, extensive travelling adventures and years of teaching English and political sciences with a great community of students, parents and teachers at Living Word Shanghai, of which I am proud and honoured to be a member.
Field of education started appealing to me just at the age of students of our school - during my middle- and high school studies. My English and Geography teachers have always been a great source of inspiration to me. No matter how complicated and difficult to understand the issue was, we, students, could never find limits of their patience and willingness to help the whole class as well as individuals. As a rule, no obstacle was too high for them in their quest to see student's academic and personal development as long as the student was eager to cooperate. At first, we could hardly get used to their strict approaches, demanding discipline and regular preparation for classes. It was only later that we discovered how invaluable these traits were and how much they contributed to our better results not only at school, but also in real life. On the other hand, their teaching methods based on authentic situations from their stays in handful of foreign countries, easy-to-imagine examples and professional, yet friendly approach to students were popular among all students from our very first lessons.
Just a few years after completing my high school, I felt confident enough to spread my knowledge and share it with my first students. Lessons with elementary school and middle school students helped me master my teaching skills before I started having classes with university students during my PhD studies and young IT professionals at various levels of hierarchy at Asseco Central Europe - prestigious, internationally operating IT solution business in Europe. Years spent with high school students in China before coming to Living Word Shanghai put my teaching experience into a whole new perspective.
However, never have I forgotten the lessons learnt from my English and Geography teachers: be strict, yet fair, friendly and patient, mix bits of humour and competitivness into serious activities and never run out of examples to illustrate the topic of discussion. Class talks in which individual opinions and critical thinking are encouraged, games, real-life examples from more than 60 countries that I have visited or lived in, removing fear of making mistakes and not giving up on any student have proved to be effective tools to achieve students' ambitions, which, in fact, become my ambitions, too. Because it is only through hard and persistent work that I can find my greatest motivation.
What feeling brings more joy than happiness in the face of a student who passed all exams with excellent scores and was accepted by prestigious foreign universities? What can be a better source of self-growth for a teacher than substantially higher confidence of his students when they use their English skills in real life or understand complicated contemporary issues of the international relations? I can think of none.
