学术总监给家长的一封信

Dear Parents,

The excitement fills our halls as another school year at Living Word begins. We’re grateful for such a wonderful community of teachers, students and parents as we work together. I’m excited to serve as the Academic Director for this school year at Living Word. I’d like to welcome all of you back and especially like to welcome those of you that are new to our Living Word Community. Welcome to our family!

We finished a busy teacher-training week and we are all excited for the opportunity to teach your child. The teachers for our school this year come from a variety of backgrounds and bring with them valuable experience and perspectives. We don’t just see education as only achieving a high grade, but it’s also a process that will shape your child’s character for the rest of their lives. As a school and staff, we thank you for entrusting the valuable responsibility of educating your child to us. One theme from our teacher training was the idea of all of us swimming in the “same direction”. This illustration shows that we all have different skills, strengths and speeds, but we all move towards the same goal – the quality education and care of your child. We hope to have many new events this year and provide you with more opportunities to be involved.

High School DevelopmentsOur partnership with Principal Miskimen and Living Word Lutheran High School in Jackson, WI is as strong as ever. By following their rigorous academic plans, we are able to award Living Word Shanghai’s graduates with USA diplomas. In accordance with this, we have a few new changes in order to adhere to the US academic system: Credits are awarded at the completion of the yearlong course; this provides students with the complete course knowledge and curriculum as they finish the class. Our world language program and diversity and depth in languages offered has always been a strength here at Living Word. In order to help our students stand out amongst their peers in the university applications, we are requiring our students to progress from level 1 of their foreign language class to level 2. Physical education will be rotational; this provides students with the opportunity to learn many new different sports and games as well as exposing them to new strategies and chances for teamwork and cooperation. Students in the US are able to gain a well-rounded foundational understanding of many different sports with this practice. This new approach to physical education will be implemented not only in our high school program but also our middle school and primary schools as well.

We would like to encourage your child to continue to be active and involved in our after-school clubs and events after school. We would like to open up even more clubs that provide international competitions and will allow them to establish truly global networks and connections. By participating in these different clubs, students are able to follow their interest and passions as well as enhance their university applications.

In a move to broaden our own pedagogy and learning practices, we are partnering with many famous professors and Universities in the United States, such as the “YouCubed” program from Stanford University and mindset learning developed by Professor Dweck and specialized in mathematics by Professor Boaler. Our goal is to develop well-rounded programs that adopt the best practices from international educational programs. This new program will benefit all of our grades, Primary – high school, and enhance our student learning and improve teaching practice.

We would also like you to continue to be involved! Our parent network is a valuable resource as we further develop our school. We will be forming a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) to serve as a bridge between the school and parents and a method of open communication.

随着美高学校新学期的开始，学校走廊里到处充满了学生的欢声笑语。很感谢能有这样一群优秀的老师、学生和家长共同努力，同时也很开心这学期能在美高学校担任学术部主任，在这里我代表美高师生欢迎你们来到美高，尤其是那些可爱的新面孔，欢迎你们加入美高大家庭!

我们在暑假已经完成了繁忙的教师培训周，老师们对于能有机会教导这些优秀的孩子感到很激动。这学期我们迎来了一些来自不同背景的老师，他们带来了十分宝贵的教育经验和观点。我们不能仅仅将教育看作是取得好成绩的过程，它更是一个塑造孩子余生性格的过程。作为学校的老师，我们很感激你们能将教育孩子的重责委托给我们。教师培训的一个主题就是确定我们所有老师需要努力的方向，这就意味着尽管我们各自有着不同的专业、力量和速度，但我们都在朝着同一个方向努力——即提高教学质量和关心照顾你们的孩子。希望这学期学校会开展更多新的活动使每一位家长也能够有机会参与进来。

高中部发展方向我们与Dave Miskimen校长和美国威斯康辛州美高母校的合作越来越密切。通过学习他们严格的课程方案，学校将授予上海美高学校的毕业生美国文凭。据此，为了与美国的教育体制接轨，学校将在一些相关问题上稍作调整： 学校将在学生完成一学年的课程后授予相应的学分;在完成课程学习过程中他们会收获全面的课程知识 学校提供的世界语言课程，包括语言的多样性和深度一直以来是美高学校的强项。为了帮助我们的学生在申请大学的过程中优于其他同龄人，我们要求学生的外语水平从一级提高至二级。 体育课多种课程将轮流进行;这将使学生有机会学习不同运动项目和比赛，同时教会他们新的战略，锻炼他们的团队合作和写作能力。通过这种体育实践，美国的学生能够对许多不同的体育项目有基本的了解，实现全面发展。这种新的体育教育方法不仅应用于我们的高中课程，中学和小学也会采用这种方式。

我们想要鼓励孩子能够继续积极参加学校社团和课外活动，我们希望能够开设更多社团，这些社团能够有机会参与到国际比赛中去，并能够允许他们建立真正意义上的全球网络和。通过参加这些不同的社团，学生不仅能够追求自身的兴趣和热情，同时能够提高他们在大学申请中的实力。

为了扩展自身的教育和学习实践，我们与美国许多著名的大学和教授建立了合作关系，例如斯坦福大学的“YouCubed”项目，其中包括Dweck教授的思维学习模式，以及Boaler教授的数学研究计划。我们的目标是能够从国际教育项目吸收的实践，从而逐渐形成能够促进学生全面发展的计划。这一新的计划将有助于提高小学至高中的学生成绩，提高学生的学习能力，改进教学实践。

我们希望各位家长也能积极参与，紧密的家校对学校的进一步发展是一种宝贵的资源。我们将成立一个家长教师会，作为沟通学校和家长的桥梁和一种开放沟通的方式。
