On Wednesday morning, we first continued to do the challenges of coding nanosatellites. Mr.Ben told us to use one large rectangle and a small rectangle to make a cross and use the paper clip to fix them on to the position servo on the top of the satellite. After fixing them together, we put a light sensor on it. This was used to detect lights. In the afternoon, we started the light challenge of coding. At first, it was difficult for me and Yvonne to make the position servo stop when there was light in that direction. Mr.Ben told us how to set and use a variable and the logic of it. With this knowledge, setting and using variables in projects was not such a difficult challenge for us and we solved the problem quickly. After then, we were asked to make the satellite to measure the brightness of each rotation Angle and to record which Angle had the highest brightness and the brightness it had. When the scan was complete, the satellite turned to the brightest Angle. If the light disappeared, the sweeping started again. In this challenge, we had to use comparison in the code. This meant we had to make the satellite turned around forever, and record the direction that had the brightest light. And when the current brightness was larger than the highest brightness before, then the current one would be set as the highest one. Then when the whole track was finished, the satellite could come back to the direction that had the brightest light there. After making all the logic clear, we wrote the code quickly without any huge problems. However, when we tested with the flashlight of my phone, it always stopped at the same direction every time, no matter where was the brightest light. Then we tried to get some help from Mr.Ben. He checked our code. He found out that there was no problem with our code except for the last line. We missed a “pause” in the last line so that there was no time for the satellite to react to the irritation it met! This demonstrated the importance of “pause” and “wait” again as we were taught on Monday. Then we added a “pause” into the code and tested it with my mobile phone again. But it didn’t work as well! We were all shocked and surprised by that. After then, Mr.Ben used his laser pen to erect a light pointing award the light servo, it worked! This seemed strange. So I discussed with Mr.Ben why would this happen. I thought it was because the light from my cell phone and it separated into some different directions so that the light servo couldn’t find the exact direction of the highest brightness. Mr.Ben agreed with that, and he said he thought there was another reason that might cause this, the factor was the strength of the lights of two different tools. The light from my phone was too weak to be detected by the satellite. This taught me that even an experiment was failed, it could also give us some knowledge and new idea if we thought about the reason for failing. In another word, failure taught success, wasn’t it?
